GitHub has deleted the accounts of people suspected of being Russian.
This includes deleting all of their pull requests, issues, and comments — causing massive confusion and issues in projects where critical pieces of data have just completely, magically disappeared.
GitHub is doing this, apparently, because of US sanctions against Russia for a war that the United States is not a part of between two nations that are — interestingly enough not the United States, nor close allies of the United States.
Also worth noting that GitHub has previously fought against sanctions of Iran. Then CEO of GitHub, Nat Friedman said, “All developers should be free to use GitHub, no matter where they live.”
In other words:
Are you from Iran? GitHub will find a way to allow you to use GitHub, despite US sanctions, because “All developers should be free to use GitHub, no matter where they live.” GitHub will fight for you.
Are you from Russia? GitHub hates you. GitHub says should not be allowed to use GitHub. Also any project that you have contributed to will now be punished by deleting (all of your pull requests, comments and issues… thus creating mass confusion for the remaining people who are still allowed to use GitHub.
GitHub is neat.
So is their parent company. I forget who their name is… I swear… it’s on the tip of my tongue… Microsomethingorother…. ah, it’ll come to me…
