Twitter now has more secure voting than many US states. Seriously.
And, yes, that is ridiculous.
Check out this tweet from the Head Twitter Dude himself:
That last line is the key bit: “Voting in polls will require verification.”
Now, in this case, “verification” isn’t much more than providing a payment method and paying a monthly or yearly fee.
But, just the same, that is significantly more ID verification than several US states currently have in their official elections. (Where votes can often be placed with nothing more than an unverified name.)
In order to vote in Twitter Polls you will need to:
Pay a recurring fee (which makes generating a large bulk of fake identities — in order to hijack a vote — potentially quite expensive).
Create a paper trail (to some degree) leading back to a source of money and, potentially, a real identity.
What is truly insane to me is — as insecure as this is — Twitter Polls are now several orders of magnitude more secure than the current voting procedures of may states.
Twitter polls.
Wild.
